The rain started sometime during the night and continued well until noon. It started off so gently that I barely noticed the initial sprinklings as I slept, exhausted from yesterday’s paddling.
But the storm quickly gained momentum, taking on tropical proportions, making peaceful sleep impossible. I tossed and turned, haunted with visions of our kayak washing out to sea. Daybreak offered no respite, forcing us to wait out the downpour in our cramped little tent.

Luckily, the clouds eventually broke, allowing us to play and explore the reef surrounding Henning Island. It was awesome! We kayaked about the reef, using our snorkel masks to view the different colors, shapes, and textures that make the reef so fascinating and other-worldly. We saw giant clams, tropical fish, even the dreaded Crown-of-Thorns Starfish. (Oh – we saw dolphins, too! So cool!)
